HISTORY OF BENCHMARKING
The Benchmarking process is a well established method within the fields of science and engineering. I have worked within the field of Rocket Propulsion systems for 30 years where we used these methods to improve the performance of rocket engines on the Space Shuttle, International Space Station and deep space system. To improve the performance of an engine, we would divide a complex system down into its sub-systems and study the performance of each piece. We would do this to identify the areas of poor performing systems. With these identified, we focused our attention on areas to improved them. When we re-assembled the system, the total performance was increased.
I have applied this process to the process of golf. Golf is not much different than a rocket engine. It too is a process that can be broken down into its sub-systems (each club is a sub-system or each type of shot -approach, putt, etc.). Benchmarking provides the tools to study every component of your golf system through excercises at the driving range, practice green and golf course. All this information gives you an accurate snap-shot of your true game. You will now have all the information you need to create a "Sturctured Practice Regiment" to address these areas and improve your total game. Benchmark every year to measure your improvement or see if new problem areas have developed. This has worked for science and engineering and will also work for your game.
