Luck is not for the Scientific Golfer. They want understanding, intellect and skill. This type of golfer is the Scientific Golfer…Smart Golf through Simple Science!”

SCIENTIFIC GOLFER GRIFF-METER ™ GREENSPEED MEASUREMENT DEVICE

This is a product that is long overdue! As you know, the USGA® Stimpmeter® was invented by Fred Stimpson in 1934 and formally adopted by the USGA® in 1977. While clever, the design has remained essentially unchanged for 70-years. From my research with many golfing professionals, the real issue is the USGA® Stimpmeter® requires 7-15 feet of flat and level rolling ball distance to measure the speed of a green which is not always available on today's highly contoured and undulating greens. In many cases, they can only measure a few of their greens and I have been told about superintendents who can’t measure any with the USGA® Stimpmeter® . It is just too long and the velocity of the ball is too fast causing the ball to roll too far!

The Scientific Golfer GRIFF-METER™ only requires 1/3 the rolling distance of the USGA® Stimpmeter® which enables the green speed of all greens to be measured. Another important advantage of the GRIFF-METER™ is that it is simple, fast and totally accurate. The USGA® Stimpmeter® requires in many cases two people, a tape measure, a level, and at least 10 minutes per measurement. The GRIFF-METER ™ requires no extra tools, and a complete reading can be taken by a single person in less than 2 minutes. Many have suggested that I need to offer it to the USGA®. Which could then offer both the Stimpmeter® and the GRIFF-METER™.

While the golfing professional sees the GRIFF-METER™ as a long awaited tool improvement, my real intention was to make this tool practical and easy to use for the average golfer to carry in their golf bag. A practical greenspeed measurement device has never been offered to the golfing public. While you do not use this during busy Saturday morning before every putt, you can use it on the practice green before a round of golf or if things are slow on the course, you can take reading from each green to understand variations, greenspeed consistency. With this you will gain insight into how green speed varies from hole to hole, from early morning dew to afternoon sun, between various courses, after mowing and watering and more. This knowledge will help you with additional insight when you are making an important putt.

Since putting is 50% of your total score, doesn’t it just make sense to get a better understanding of all factors that will affect the outcome of each putt. Improved understanding will lead to better decisions. Order the GRIFF-METER™ today and start to gain this knowledge and lower your score today.

SCIENTIFIC GOLFER BENCHMARKING BASICS

The Scientific Golfer book Benchmarking Basics, has not been seen within the golf industry before and is not for the common golfer. While all skill levels will benefit from the knowledge that this process will provide, generally only the serious golfer will take the time to do it. The process of Benchmarking will provide a complete club-by-club assessment of your golfing skill, good and bad tendencies, and an assessment of patterns or trends in your golfing performance. The benchmarking assessment starts at the golf range where you will be hitting a total of 30 balls with each of your woods and irons over three different visits. Spreading the Baselining over three visits will give you insight into how much your game various day to day. Your average tendencies with each club, the scatter pattern of ball distributions, and more will be available for each club. You can do a reduced assessment in one visit with 10 balls/club if time is a factor...

The next step will be to go to a putting green and an area where you can go through the chipping exercises. During this phase of the assessment, you will be establishing your tendencies when chipping from 50, 30, 20, and 10 yards. Your putting accuracies will then be measured from 32, 16, 8, 4, and 2 feet through a variety of conditions to fully establish your chipping and putting tendencies.

The final step in this process is to go to the golf course and with the Scientific Golfer “Advanced Score Cards”, record every shot, the club you used, the results of each stroke, and the conditions (wind, slope), and mental (confident, frustrated, etc) state you were in at the time of each stroke. When the round is completed, you can take this data and perform a simple analysis on your game. You will not believe how revealing and informative it will be to have total “recall” of every stroke of every hole and what this will tell you. Without this, all this important information is forgotten by the time you get to the “19th Hole”. This is not something you do every round but occasionally when you would like to fully understand the details of your performance.

Finally, using this information is the payoff. Many will just fill out the PocketCaddy™ and use this information as a course management tool. Others will look at the data and identify areas of strengths and weaknesses and ask why? Doing this Benchmarking process with a friend or clients is not only informative but fun, Give it a try.

ADVANCED SCORE CARDS

I was looking through the sports section the other day and ran across an article on an international chess tournament. That’s right—chess in the sports section. One thing that caught my eye was the use of the term “chess notation” to record every chess move made. After the match, people go over these notations to spot brilliant moves and strategies, as well as blunders and lost opportunities. Reviewing such notations allows chess players to learn from the masters.

Imagine if there was an easy to use golf notation that recorded every stroke in a match, club usage percentages, how well you hit each shot, slice or hook, distance, how close to the pin, etc? At the 19th hole we could all sit around and have “total club recall” on every hole. We could see where we got in trouble, and where we were brilliant for a fleeting few moments. Wouldn’t this be great?

That is why I invented the Advanced Score Cards which enables you to record this level of detail about your game. It’s fast and presents you with a wealth of information about your game which can lead to focused, structured practices addressing specific problem areas as well as identifying troublesome problem areas. Also, the next time you played this course you would have total club recall. It just makes sense to occasionally record the details of a round to get information you need to improve as well as better course management. It just makes sense!

Your can purchase a set of Advanced Score Cards on this website in a packet of three different types. The first is called GRIFF-Notes™ and is a “chess like” notation where you can record everything that could affect your score (swing tendencies, mental state, weather conditions and more). A second type is graphical and you can sketch on it the location of every ball hit and the associated statistics. The third type is a form where you can record this information in a tabulated format. I included all three types so you can try them all and pick the style you like best.

Scientific Golfer has other products under development which will be available on this site in the future. I will also be adding other products over the next year from other manufacturers that match the philosophy of Scientific Golfer…Smart Golf through Simple Science.
